OVERLAND, Mo. (AP) – An 80-bed residential care center for developmentally disabled people in St. Louis County is now shut down.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the state of Missouri has closed the Northwest Habilitation Center in Overland. It is part of the state effort to move residents into smaller, community-based homes. A facility in Nevada, Mo., closed earlier this year, leaving nine centers in operation, including three in the St. Louis area.

Missouri’s residential care system has long been under scrutiny because of client deaths and criminal mistreatment. The state has not allowed new admissions to state-operated centers in more than four years.

Missouri is one of many states moving to community settings. Ten states and the District of Columbia have shut down all of their institutions.
