ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The crash that killed St. Louisan Jerry Brown of the Dallas Cowboys, and led to drunk driving charges against his teammate Josh Brent, has refocused attention on athletes and alcohol use.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has an agreement with the National Football League to educate its players about the dangers of impaired driving.

But MADD CEO Debbie Weir says unfortunately, it seems like most teams aren’t aware. Of the 32 NFL franchises, only the Steelers and Buccaneers take part in the program.

“Victim speakers who come and tell their story in a non-judgmental way, that just says ‘this is how my family’s life has changed due to a drunk-driving crash,’” Weir explained. She said they have had a little more success with an outreach program aimed at fans.

“We’re promoting during the pre-game period, the tailgating period, we’re promoting the message of designating a sober driver. Have fun at the game today but who’s going to get you home safe?”

Ironically, MADD’s national headquarters is located in Irving, Texas, less than a mile from the scene of Saturday’s deadly crash.
