MINERAL POINT, MO (KMOX)-A Washington County, Mo. sheriff’s deputy is dead and a manhunt is underway for his killer.

Missouri highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Justin Wheetley says the deputy was shot around 2 am Saturday in Mineral Point.  The sheriff’s department was assisting EMS, loading an unconscious woman into an ambulance, when officers were ambushed, “A single shot was fired outside a mobile home, in front of it, and struck and fatally injured a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy.” Wheatley says, “The suspect then fled into a wooded area behind the residence.”

Authorities are looking for Gary Sancegrow.  He’s described as a six-foot two, 125 pound white man with red hair and brown eyes.  He was wearing camouflage clothing.  Wheatley says authorities have not determined a motive for the shooting.

The name of the Washington County deputy killed is being withheld until relatives are notified.
