ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) - The Parkway School District will host a school safety summit tomorrow, bringing police and education leaders together to talk about protecting students.

St. Louis County police chief Tim Fitch, who recently suggested arming school employees, will be there.

Parkway’s security chief Fred Crawford says he’s still “digesting” the thought of teachers with guns, but thinks it’ll help to jump-start a serious discussion.

“What kind of security program do these schools want? What level of security do you really want and how can the County Police and the school districts come together and provide you with really solid, safe programs?” Crawford asked.

The programs cost money, which a lot of districts don’t have these days. Crawford says many districts, in recent years, had to decide between hiring school-resource officers or teachers.

“But I was really thinking about a school safety tax, something that could take out of the hands of the school administrators, school officials and police,” he said. “Something that could be a funding measure.”

And he says it would provide a consistent level of funding, so that the levels of security could never be questioned. Crawford also points to the COPS grants of years ago as another possibility.

The Parkway School District’s emergency plan was put into action during a manhunt Tuesday near Parkway South High School.
