SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he’s got the go-ahead to close two prisons and five other correctional facilities.

Quinn said in a news release late Wednesday that an Alexander County Judge dissolved an injunction stopping the closures. The Illinois Supreme Court last week ordered the judge to lift the injunction.

Quinn says shuttering the high-security Tamms prison, the women’s lockup in Dwight, two juvenile facilities and three halfway houses will be complete “in the coming weeks.”

Quinn wanted most of the doors shut by Aug. 31 but the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees sued to stop him. The union representing state workers feared the closures will jeopardize employees’ safety.
