ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Police Wednesday found the rare, 19th-century Bible stolen last Saturday from St. John’s Lutheran Church at Morganford and Chippewa.
The burglar also opened a room full of Christmas presents, but didn’t take any. A 20-year-old suspect was allegedly peddling the Bible at antique stores on Cherokee Street Wednesday. Police say he was wearing the same clothes he had worn during the burglary.
Altar Guild President Eunice Bein says the congregation knew things would work out, but not this quickly.
“It’s been very down but a lot of us, as members, have really remembered to focus our faith in God and God does provide for us,” she said.
Bein says it was the second break-in in two weeks, with a total of fourteen throughout the course of the year. A businessman is offering to donate a security system to the church.
The Bible is from the time of the congregation’s founding, around 1870. The text is in German.
