ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – Missouri could be missing out on more than 450-million dollars in Internet sales taxes, according to one state representative.
Florissant Representative Margo McNeil says Missouri could see that money if they join 24 other states and sign the, Streamline Agreement, a national agreement asking online retailers to collect sales tax and funnel it back to the state where the shopper lives.
The Democrat says she filed bills asking lawmakers to do just that in 2010 and 2011.
But that’s failed in part because the agreement is voluntary for those online companies.
The Supreme Court says if the retailer don’t have a physical store in the state, a state can’t collect sales tax from it. Only a federal requirement could change that.
