STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. (KMOX) – Members of Saint Genevieve Catholic Church are hoping someone will return a handful of relics that have been missing from the church for a couple of weeks.
Ste. Genevieve’s pastor, Reverend Dennis Schmidt, says the relics don’t have a street value, “there really priceless, there value is a spiritual value.”
The relics were brought to the church from Rome in the 1930s and 1940s.
Rev. Schmidt says he believes the nine relics were stolen over the holidays.
“The cleaning ladies cleaned up on Christmas Eve getting ready for the Christmas celebration and they were there,” Rev. Schmidt told KMOX. But when the clean crew came back January 4th they noticed the relics were missing.
Typically relics are placed on, or near the altars of Catholic churches. These rare pieces of clothing or bones of certain saints are used in a personal devotional way bringing the faithful closer to that saint and to Jesus.
Father Schmidt says he’d like the relics back — no questions asked.
