JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s second term began with a chill.

Temperatures were well below freezing Monday as the governor rode in an inaugural parade and took the oath of office during an outdoor ceremony.

Just how cold was it?

So cold that members of Nixon’s administration had to clear frost and ice off the 3,840 folding chairs placed on the lawn of the Capitol for the inauguration. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder sat with a blanket over his legs while listening to Nixon’s speech. And some chilly audience members left before the ceremony concluded.

The temperature was 24 at the time of the inauguration. Heaters were placed under the raised stage from which Nixon spoke in order to keep state officials warm.

Audience members relied solely upon coats, hats and gloves.
