EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois man has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial in the stabbing death of his father.
The (Alton) Telegraph reports that 23-year-old Justin Thompson of Wood River is now confined to the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services. A Madison County judge will get periodic updates about whether Thompson becomes competent enough to stand trial.
Attorneys for both sides accepted the findings of a court psychologist who evaluated Thompson.
Thompson is charged with first-degree murder in Glen Thompson’s death last September.
Authorities say Thompson stabbed the 67-year-old victim with a kitchen knife during an argument. Glen Thompson’s body was found on a porch.
