UPDATE:

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The Missouri Department of Transportation has delayed a planned closure of Interstate 64 in downtown St. Louis until the weekend of February 1-4.

Crews would not be able to complete necessary striping for the project due to projected rain in Sunday’s forecast.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The Taylor and Newstead overpasses over Interstate 64 in St. Louis City are now closed, and I-64/40 itself will shut down this coming weekend.

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Andrew Gates says those two bridges are ones that were “left behind” during the massive I-64 rebuild a few years back.

“What we’re doing is preparing those bridges over the next week for removal,” he said. “On Friday through Monday of next week we’ll be closing the interstate, probably about eight p.m. on Friday and until about five a.m. on Monday.”

“You remember when we did the I-64 project, our desire, our hope was to get from 270 to Sarah and we had a certain amount of money available,” he added.

While the interstate is closed, crews will remove the Taylor and Newstead bridges over I-64 as part of a project to construct a new interchange at Tower Grove and Boyle and replace four bridges over the interstate.

The ramps from McCausland, Skinker, Hampton and Kingshighway to eastbound I-64 will be closed during this time. In addition, the ramps from Pine, Jefferson, Market and Grand to westbound I-64 will be closed during this time.

Gates says, after this weekend’s shutdown, I-64/40 will have narrowed and shifted lanes between Hampton and Forest Park Parkway for about 18 months.

Motorists should be aware of the following on-going closures:
