ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- The Archbishop of New York — Cardinal Timothy Dolan — took part in Saturday’s funeral Mass for another Cardinal— baseball legend Stan Musial.
The two men got to know each other many years ago, says Cardinal Dolan, “When Stan would come up to Holy Communion when I was at Immacolata as a young priest — he would often come to the 5pm Sunday Mass on the way back from the ballgame— you’d see that awe, that reverence, and that sincerity. You’d know this is a man of integrity and faith and virtue.”
Dolan —a huge baseball fan — says he could notice the intensity in Musial’s eyes at the Communion rail, “We priests would say we knew what opposing pitchers felt, because we looked into those eyes too, at a sacred moment.”
Dolan keeps a red Cardinals baseball cap given to him by Stan Musial in a special place at his home— next to the red biretta given to him by Pope Benedict when he was elevated to Cardinal.
