TROY, MO. (KMOX) - The person in charge of keeping track of jail inmate’s money is, herself, behind bars.
Helen Diane Mershon of Troy, Missouri is charged with the theft of more than $25,000 from inmates in the Lincoln County Jail.
She is being held on $75,000 cash only bond.
Sheriff John Cottle, who stepped into the job just last month, says he’s changing a system whereby Mershon worked alone with no accountability to anyone.
The sheriff said she operated with no supervision and he has already changed that so it doesn’t happen again.
