Walbridge Student Representing St. Louis At National Poetry Slam

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A sixth-grade student at Walbridge Elementary school is headed to New York City next month after being selected to represent St. Louis at the 7th annual America SCORES National Poetry SLAM.

Avante Morgan’s winning poem is called “To Know Me.” Below is an excerpt.

To know me is to encourage me
To know me is to praise me
To know me is to help me stay strong
To teach me to know right from wrong

Avante says he has been writing poetry for three years. “My friends described to me how much fun it was and they told me ‘just try it out.'”

The national poetry event will be held at the New York Stock Exchange on April 8. Morgan joins 28 other poet-athletes from around the country.

American SCORES focuses on urban youth, inspiring them to lead healthy lives so they can make a difference in the world.
