A Saturday morning house fire in East St. Louis has taken the life of a 16-year-old resident.

Family members say they tried to rescue the boy — Alexander Johnson — but could not reach him.

He lived in the basement of the family home in the 6-hundred block of North 79th Street.

East St. Louis fire officials say the cause of the fire is not yet known.
