A winter super-storm named Nemo and below par response from critics did not deter patrons from going to the movies. The new road comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, “Identity Thief,” scored a hefty $36.6 million, giving it easy access to the top spot at the box office.
The motion picture that proved zombies can have hearts too, “Warm Bodies,”came in second place with $11.5 million.
The new film “Side Effects” starring Jude Law and Rooney Mara came in a very strong third place its opening weekend with $10 million. The movie is about severe consequences of a drug taken for anxiety disorder. (Always read the label!)
Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence helped propel the off-beat love story “Silver Linings Playbook” to a fourth place finish with $6.9 million. The film is now in its 13th week of release. In fifth place this weekend was “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” with a box office take of $5.8 million. The film opened well, but attendance has dropped off after a lot after its opening week.
