Thanks for checking in…
Here’s my blogging plan for my time here in Jupiter with the Cardinals: new stuff everyday. It might come in the morning, it might come in the afternoon and it might come in the evening but it will come every single day. News items, injury updates, comments from Mike Matheny, his coaches and, of course, the players as well. Whatever is relevant on a given day, I guess you could say.
There isn’t a lot of news just yet. The pitchers and catchers just finished going through their physicals and will be taking the field shortly (around 9:30 AM CT). Follow me on Twitter (@KMOXWheeler) for occasional updates and pictures from the workouts during the day. Don’t worry, I’m not going to slam you with a bunch of nonsense. It’s not my style.
Here is what we’ve got so far today:
* Just talked to both Trevor Rosenthal and Joe Kelly, two of the guys battling for a rotation spot. You can hear those interviews tonight on Sports Open Line between 6-8 PM. They’re both looking forward to the competition bringing out the best in each individual, both make the point that it’s not a grudge match or anything. They’re all friends who are battling not just for a rotation spot but for spots with the big league club, period.
* Rosenthal talked a good bit about Chris Carpenter and the time the spent together during the offseason. You’ll have to tune in to hear exactly what he said but Rosenthal is in tremendous shape, he clearly worked his butt off with Carpenter during the offseason. Rosenthal was never “out of shape” but he’s stronger than I remember his being last year.
* Mitchell Boggs, Jason Motte, Trevor Rosenthal, Shelby Miller, Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia are pitchers of note who will throw bullpen sessions today. If anything seems noteworthy I’ll pass info along via Twitter.
* Mike Matheny hasn’t talked yet…he’s due to talk just before the team takes the field. If anything is noteworthy, again I’ll have it on Twitter.
More to come over the next four weeks while I’m here. Stay tuned…
