CLAYTON, MO (KMOX) - For the past several weeks, homeless people have shown up at St. Louis County Council meetings, asking the administration of Charlie Dooley to open another emergency shelter.
Tuesday night was no different.
“In the wintertime, when it’s cold, weather is bad, every news channel, every news station says ‘bring your pets in tonight, don’t let them stay out in the cold.’ Are we no better than pets?” a homeless man said to the council.
Last year, the Dooley administration said it would provide a new shelter in the county by the end of the year. It didn’t. And now these people remind the council of that every week.
“You all are only one paycheck away from being in our shoes,” a woman said at meeting. “You really don’t understand that.”
Dooley insists the county is working on a plan to open another shelter but hasn’t given further details.
