COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – An off-duty police officer, out jogging, came across a man’s body in a ditch late Tuesday near a gas station on Belt Line Rd. near Route 157.

“We determined that the body was that of an early 20s, African-American man,” Police Maj. Tom Coppotelli said. “He was laying face-down and was fully-clothed.”

Coppotelli said the ditch could be seen from the sidewalk and not the roadway.

Police have tentatively identified the victim, but Coppotelli said they were waiting for confirmation and for family members to be notified before releasing his name.

The Madison County Coroner is examining the body.
