COTTAGE HILLS, Ill. (KMOX) – A 41 year old Madison County resident faces meth-related drug charges after his house caught fire Sunday.

Authorities say John Piper called the Cottage Hills Fire Department to his home in the 1300 block of 7th street around 9:27 p.m. He told deputies outside that he was in his bedroom when he heard a loud pop, then he noticed his home was on fire.

Evidence collected during the investigation revealed the fire was likely caused by a clandestine methamphetamine drug lab.

Police say Piper ran from the scene once emergency personnel arrived, but was later tracked to a Wood River, Illinois business where he was arrested.

Bond was set at $100,000.

Madison County Sheriff’s Investigators requested the assistance of the Illinois State Fire Marshalls Office and the Illinois State Police Methamphetamine Response Team.
