ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – You’d have to be high to think that Cardinal Timothy Dolan is in the running to be pope next.

Says who?

Well, Cardinal Dolan himself, according to Monday’s New York Post.

He was asked, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral yesterday, about the speculation that he’s headed for Vatican City, and Dolan said:

“I’d say those are only from people smoking marijuana.”

Dolan adds that he hasn’t heard anything, and doesn’t have an inside track on who might be next. If Dolan is chosen he would be the first American pope.

CBS News Vatican Correspondent Sabina Castelfranco tells KMOX one name that is being voiced a lot is Angelo Scola. He is the Archbishop of Milan.

But she says the real question is, “Are we going to get a pope who is from a third world country or is it going to be another European pope.”

Castlefranco says she wouldn’t rule out a North American pope, mentioning St. Louis native, NY Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Canadian Cardinal Marc Oulett.
