UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KMOX) - A St. Louis County senator says she wants to hold parents accountable for their kids’ actions when it comes to guns.
Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-University City) has filed a bill that would make it a crime for parents to not notify the police if their child was in a gang or had a gun illegally.
The legislation would also require parents to tell public schools that they had a gun in their homes. “You may be a parent that keeps your gun safe but you also may have another student who has a parent who doesn’t keep their gun safe,” Chappelle-Nadal said.
The senator says the list of gun owners would be kept confidentially, much like medical records. She points to four states which charge parents with crimes if their child hurt someone with a gun.
