Second Brother Goes To Trial For Steak ‘N Shake Murders

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KMOX) – The second of two brothers charged with the 2008 killings of two south St. Louis County Steak ‘n Shake employees is finally scheduled to go on trial today.

Prosecutors say Oundre Akins is the one who shot waitress Tammy Cantrell five times and cook Mark Gerstner once as he and his brother Anthony robbed the restaurant where they used to work and where their uncle still worked six days a week.

Anthony is scheduled to testify against Oundre, as part of a 2011 plea agreement which saw Anthony plead guilty to six counts, including two reduced charges of second-degree murder. He’s serving six life prison terms.

Prosecutors have agreed not to seek the death penalty against Oundre, who has agreed to have his trial heard by the judge and not a jury.

Police say the robbery netted the two $180 dollars.
