Illinois Bill Would Reappoint SIU Board Of Trustees
SPRINGFIELD, IL (IRN) - The Board of Trustees for Southern Illinois University may soon be reappointed, if a bill sponsored by State Sen. William Haine (D-Alton) passes. The bill would allow the governor to reappoint the current board and the Senate would approve the selection.
“There seems to be some internal disputes on the board, a struggle for the chair, and I believe given the past few weeks, it’s time to reconstitute the board and have a rough geographic balance and give the Senate and the governor an opportunity to reset,” Haine said.
State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) doesn’t like the bill.
“It seems a pretty dramatic step to take merely because there’s some internal divisions on the board. Are we going to inject ourselves every time there is a board that can’t get along in this manner?” Murphy said.
Haine says he has not met with the governor or the board of trustees and does not know if they support the issue.
S.B. 202 passed the Senate executive committee.
