St. Louis County Council Passes Anti-Sweatshop Bill

CLAYTON, MO (KMOX) – The St. Louis County Council passed a bill which would ban County agencies from buying uniforms from sweatshops by a vote of 5-1 Tuesday night.

Greg Quinn, the lone “no” vote, represents the Wildwood area and said the bill is too vague for his liking.

“I think it’s a well-intentioned bill but I think it includes things, defines things, as sweatshops that most people wouldn’t think of as sweatshops,” he said.

For instance, Quinn said, the bill defines a sweatshop as a place that does not pay employees time-and-a-half for overtime work.

The bill sponsor, Councilman Pat Dolan, D-Richmond Heights said it is an ethics issue and the County should not support unfair labor practices. The bill only applies to apparel, not phones, shoes, or any other office equipment.
