ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – You may have heard about the late night stabbing and shooting on Laclede’s Landing, last weekend. But, did you hear about the large gatherings there that did not involve violence?
Owner Steve Owings hosted a street party at Sundeckers for college basketball fans, “We had 200-300 Creighton fans last weekend and had absolutely zero problems. Everybody was comfortable and felt safe.”
Even though they consider last weekend’s violence to be isolated cases and not random, St. Louis police say they’ll have an increased presence on the Landing for Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend.
Derek, a manager at Big Daddy’s, says there’s no reason to avoid the food and entertainment district this weekend, “I don’t ever consider it dangerous down here. But, I think this weekend we’ve gone out of our way to make sure we’re possibly being over-protective.”
Many of the bars hire their own late night security officers and position them near entryways.
Steve Owings says the merchants are continually looking at ways to make the Landing as safe as possible, “I walk between my two businesses (Sundeckers and Morgan Street Brewery) sometimes two to three times per night. I’ve been down here 28 years and never had a problem between the two places.”
Owings says St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally one of the busiest times for bars and restaurants on the Landing.
