‘Legitimate Rape’ Comment Featured In Law & Order Plot

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – It was the comment that changed the Missouri U.S. Senate race last year and made Rep. Todd Akin a national figure for all the wrong reasons. Now, the infamous “legitimate rape” comment is being twisted into a plot for NBC’s Law & Order Special Victims Unit.

“Ripped from the headlines, words that set off a national controversy,” the show’s promo says. Then, seated in the witness chair at a rape trial, is a U.S. congressman.

“It’s nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant,” the actor says, a paraphrase of Rep. Akin’s August 18, 2012 comment that “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

As for the show’s plot, it isn’t at all similar to the Senate race that gave birth to Akin’s quote. See the video below for more.
