Metro East Unemployment Figures Show Modest Gains

EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Unemployment in the Metro East decreased slightly last month compared to the prior year.

That’s according to numbers released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security Thursday which show the unemployment rate stood at an even ten percent, down from 10.5 percent a year ago.

East St. Louis had the highest unemployment rate, 16.6 percent, up from 15.8 percent in February of 2012. Alton’s jobless rate was 12.3 percent, Belleville’s 10.8 percent, Granite City’s 10.5 percent, and Collinsville’s 9.3 percent. O’Fallon had the lowest Metro East jobless rate, according to the IDES release, at 8.6 percent.

Overall, unemployment stands at 9.6 percent in Madison County and 10.7 percent in St. Clair County.

The unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted.
