St. Clair County Accepts Credit Cards For Bail

BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOX) – If you happen to get arrested in St. Clair County, Illinois you can post your bond by charging it on your credit card.

St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson tells KMOX that the system makes sure those who charge their bail are good for it.

“When we swipe the card it goes to a central computer system and it does a check on them to make sure that the card is valid; to make sure they will make payments,” he said.

Watson said that in the nearly four months they have been accepting credit cards, they have seen no repeat arrests from those who have charged their release. Furthermore, the process is helping reduce the jail’s population by 30 to 40 inmates per day.

“There’s a cost involved with keeping people here and we want to make sure they’re provided an opportunity to post bond and be released,” Watson said.
