Circuit Attorney Has Tips For Avoiding Craigslist Crime
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If you plan on buying or selling something on Craigslist, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce has some advice.
“Keep your safety in mind,” she said. “Always meet in a public place. You can even meet in the parking lot of your local police station.”
A man was shot in north St. Louis Wednesday while answering a Craigslist ad. Police say the victim went to a north side neighborhood to look at a car he saw on Craigslist but as he pulled up to the home in the 4400 block of Elmbank around 8 p.m., two men approached him.
One of the men began firing several shots into the victim’s car before running off. The victim survived and the two men have been charged.
Joyce says never go to a seller’s or buyer’s home or have them come to your home and always bring someone with you. “Don’t ever go alone to meet a buyer or a seller on Craigslist.”
“Always make sure if you’re buying something that you tell the seller that you will not be carrying cash and that if they insist something be paid for in cash, that they can meet you later at your bank and you can withdraw the cash and pay them there in the public place,” she said.
Always trust your gut, Joyce adds; if something doesn’t feel right, more than likely it’s not.
“Get out of there because most times when people are victims of crime, they tell me that they felt like something was wrong but they kind of dismissed that feeling. You should never dismiss that feeling. If it feels like something’s wrong, something’s wrong,” she said.
