Trial For “Trooper” Puppy Dragging Begins Today

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The woman charged in the highway dragging of “Trooper” the puppy is scheduled to stand trial today.

41-year-old Benetta Johnson of East St. Louis has waived a jury trial so her case will be heard by St. Louis Circuit Judge Theresa Counts Burke.

Johnson is charged with misdemeanor animal abuse. Investigators say when she asked her 13-year-old son to return the puppy to her ex-husband on November 19, 2012 the boy tied it to the back of Victor Washington’s pickup. Washington didn’t see it the next morning and drove off, dragging the puppy down I-55 for over a mile and a half.

The puppy, now named “Trooper,” is in a foster home and improving.
