ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) –  An underground stormwater sewer line that is damaged, and has possibly collapsed, has forced the closure of one southbound lane and one northbound lane of Hanley Road.

The damage is immediately south of the busy Manchester Road intersection.

Metropolitan Sewer District crews are on the scene working to determine the extent of the damage to the pipe.

A spokesman for the county highways department says they hope to make the repairs without further disrupting the traffic flow, but it’s possible that all of Hanley will have to be shut down south of Manchester indefinitely if the pipe has indeed collapsed.

He says roughly 40,000 drivers use Hanley Road on a daily basis, and that the Manchester intersection is one of the busiest in the county so a full closure will only be made as a last resort.
