Governor Nixon Declares State of Emergency in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency after a system of strong storms caused damage around St. Louis and other parts of Missouri.

The governor’s office said that Wednesday’s severe weather had caused damage in the St. Louis region and power outages in southern Missouri. Nixon has activated the state emergency operations plan, which allows state agencies to directly coordinate with local officials to provide emergency services.

Nixon surveyed storm damage Thursday and met with local officials. The governor’s office cancelled a news conference about Medicaid scheduled for Thursday at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
