BRIDGETON, MO. (KMOX) – Beginning on Monday, residents who live near the Bridgeton Landfill will likely experience even more odor than what they’ve complained about in the past…but it will be for a good cause.

A key phase to eliminate the odor altogether begins on Monday.

The parent company of Bridgeton Landfill LLC, Republic Services Inc., will begin excavating sections of the landfill. It’s to remove steel reinforced concrete.

The reason they need to get that out of the landfill is so they can cap it with plastic liner and not have to worry about the liner tearing open because of the reinforcement rods in the concrete.

Once the surface is smoothed out without the obstructions, the liner can be put into place to stop the odor , the company hopes, once and for all.

Pattonville Fire officials said the odor will actually increase during the work, but the effort should be complete by April 30th, weather permitting.
