Illinois Could Follow Missouri’s Lead On Veteran Tuition

SPRINGFIELD, IL (IRN) – College is expensive, but an Illinois senator has an idea to give a break to veterans.

“This is an opportunity for us to give back to those who have sacrificed for their country,” said State Sen. Michael Hastings (D-Orland Hills), an Army veteran.

Hastings is sponsoring a bill that would give veterans from any state the opportunity to receive in-state tuition if they use the 9/11 GI bill.

“My goal is to provide the educational opportunities to come here to Illinois and get educated because we know that they will go on to provide leadership opportunities,” Hastings said. “When they do that, I want them to say that they are from Illinois.”

SB 2167 has passed the Senate.
