JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KMOX) - Jefferson County residents should evacuate if they live near a body of water.

“We are asking anyone who lives near a creek, river, large body of water such as a lake or pond, to seek ground immediately,” Janet Smith with Jefferson County Police said.

There are unverified reports that a dam at Valley Lake in Jefferson County was breached. However, officials told KMOX Thursday afternoon that those reports could not be confirmed. De Soto and areas around Joachin Creek are experiencing flash flooding.

Warren Robinson with the Jefferson County Emergency Management said an evacuation center has been set-up at Redeemer Lutheran Church at 1620 Boyd.

“A few other churches in the area that have, on their own, opened their doors up to people. One of the issues we are dealing with down there is to make sure that it’s safe for responders to go into this flooded areas, they’ve turned off the power to a portion of the city as well as the affected area,” he said.
