Flood-Prone Grafton Seeing River Levels Rise Again
Get Breaking News First
GRAFTON, Ill. (AP) – Nestled where the Mississippi and Illinois rivers meet, the Illinois tourist town of Grafton isn’t a stranger to flooding. And the 700-resident place northeast of St. Louis is gearing up for another round of river headaches.
Flood stage in Grafton is 18 feet, but the National Weather Service says the Mississippi as of late morning Friday was at 21.6 feet with an expected crest next Wednesday of 30.5 feet.
Mayor Tom Thompson says the town is being pro-active, planning to close the main road leading into and out of Grafton by midday Saturday. Some businesses nearest the river are clearing out.
Thompson says the forecast crest will match what the Mississippi reached there five years ago. That’s when 20 homes and businesses were swamped and Grafton’s main road cut off.
