The new action film starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, “Pain and Gain,” drove itself to the top of the movie box office over the weekend taking in a slightly higher than expected $20 million. The closer we get to the start of the summer movie season over Memorial Day weekend, the better high-energy films sell.
The sci-fi film “Oblivion” starring Tom Cruise came in second in its second week in release with a total of $17.4 million for the weekend.
The bio pic on the career and struggles of Jackie Robinson, “42,” continues to sell well taking in $10.7 million over the weekend.
The all-star flop starring Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton, “The Big Wedding,” limped into fourth place its opening weekend talking in only $7.5 million. “The Croods” came in 5th with $6.6 million.
The most critically acclaimed film playing in St. Louis right now, “Mud,” starring Matthew McConaughey, is in limited release on only 363 screens. “Mud” came in first on what is called the Limited Release Box Office Report with a $2.2 million for the weekend.
