ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — On the heels of another rough outing for the Cardinals bullpen, the club optioned lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski to Memphis (AAA) on Monday morning, purchasing the contract of righthander Seth Maness.

Maness, 24, was the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012.  He was 2-2 with a 4.32 earned run average in four starts at Memphis this season.  Maness recorded 18 strikeouts and just three walks in 25 innings.  He will be making his major league debut with his first appearance.

Rzepczynski, in nine appearances with the Cardinals, allowed seven runs in eight innings of work.

Through Sunday’s games, the Cardinals’ bullpen had a 5.93 ERA, the worst in Major League Baseball.
