ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 12-year-old chess prodigy from California will be among the contestants in a national competition next month in St. Louis.

For the fifth straight year, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is playing host to the U.S. Championship and the U.S. Women’s Championship. Male and female competitors will vie for the titles from May 3 to 13.

Tournament organizers say Samuel Sevian, of Santa Clara, is the youngest person ever to compete in the U.S. Championship. He was just 9 when he was named a “National Master,” which at the time made him the youngest person to achieve that title in U.S. chess history.
