GRAFTON, IL (KMOX) – The mayor of Grafton, Illinois had big plans for Sunday, May 19.

That is when the Grafton Ferry was due to reopen after a two-year “dry-dock.”

But Mayor Tom Thompson says those plans are now on hold due to Mississippi River flooding.

“I’m optimistic it will still get opened in May, that’s what I’m hoping for, but we just have to wait and see how rapidly the river recedes because they do have a couple of weeks of dredging,” he said.

Thompson says after the flood of 2008 there has been major sand build-up in the path the Grafton Ferry takes to get to Missouri.

“The Grafton Ferry is coming back and it sure helps our tourism here,” Thompson said.
