Battle Shaping Up Over Naming Rights for Mississippi River Bridge
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) — A battle is shaping up over the naming rights for the new Mississippi River bridge.
Early in the non-debate there was a ground swell of support for naming the bridge after the late great baseball hall of famer Stan Musial. It had the unwavering support of politicians on both sides of the river and even members of the United States Congress praised the idea, but then other names surfaced, Andy Gammon who died building the bridge and Congressman Lacy Clay senior. Now Illinois lawmakers have backed out, copped out, finked out and have voted to name the bridge the “Veterans’ Memorial Bridge.”
Leading that effort; State Rep. Jay Hoffman of Belleville who reportedly said he made a promise to veterans. Both Illinois and Missouri have a bridge dedicated to Veterans and a couple of highways.
The bridge will not be completed until 2014, so there’s still plenty of time to try and work this thing out, but remember we are dealing with politicians trying to make a decision.
