Illinois Rep. Says Veterans, Not Musial, Deserve Bridge Namesake
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – There is still no resolution from area politicians on the naming of the new Mississippi River Bridge.
Today, Illinois State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Belleville, said he has great respect for Stan Musial but believes the bridge should be named after the men and women who died for the country.
“The agreement is very specific and I helped negotiate that deal years ago,” he said. “It indicates Illinois and Missouri have to join to make that determination so I understand Missouri’s feelings on naming it after Stan Musial, a great man for St. Louis and the entire country.”
Yet, Hoffman says, Illinois lawmakers made a commitment to name it the Veterans Memorial Bridge. The bill has already passed in the Illinois House and Hoffman expects it will get the green light in the Senate as well.
Hoffman was asked by KMOX’s Mike Kelly that since Stan Musial was a veteran, why not name the bridge after veterans and Musial?
“There are some that have suggested that. I can tell you that, personally, I’m not totally opposed to doing that. However, we here have given our word that we’re going to name it the Veterans Memorial Bridge but if that’s what comes of it, I could certainly be in support of it,” he said.
