FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOX) – In an effort to keep it a “family friendly event,” organizers of Florissant’s Valley of Flowers Festival are instituting new rules designed to keep bands of kids from roaming the grounds and causing problems.
For the first time, those 18 years-old and under will not be allowed on the grounds unless they are accompanied by someone over the age of 21.
Florissant Police officer Andy Haarmann says officers will be checking ages at the gate and roaming the fairgrounds looking for those underage.
“The person is then going to ask them who their adult is and if they don’t have one with them at the time then they would have to leave,” he said.
Haarmann says no single incident prompted organizers to make the change.
“They just noticed more and more that kids are just standing around, hanging out, and the potential for problems is there,” he said.
Haarmann said the new rules have been publicized, including in schools and on Facebook. He added that those notifications have been received favorably.
There will only be one entrance to the fairgrounds, on St. Francois. The fair opens tonight.
