ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – While preservationists are desperately hoping someone comes along to save it, the city of St. Louis is expected to officially declare its intention to issue a demolition permit on the Cupples 7 building today.
“I think it’s certain that it’s going to come down,” downtown alderwoman Phyllis Young said.
Young admits it will be a sad day when the long-vacant building at 11th and Spruce comes down. While the other Cupples buildings have been successfully rehabbed, Young says Cupples 7 would simply cost too much.
“You’ve got to put three to five million [dollars] in the box itself to stabilize it before you ever start the renovation of the building,” she added. “The only thing that is remaining are the walls and there is no timber supporting those walls so if at any point a strong wind came through, they could collapse.”
The demolition, which is expected to cost the city about $850,000, should begin next month.
