St. Clair County Increases Enforcement on Graffiti

BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOX) – Property owners in St. Clair County could face fines up to $750 if they don’t remove graffiti.

St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern said the Sheriff’s Department needed help.

“The Building and Zoning Department has seen this issue come up so much we decided we would tackle it head-on, increase the fine, and make sure people knew we were serious about graffiti removal and it seems to be having an effect,” he said.

Kern says the increased fine appears to be working, with many property owners coming forward and removing the graffiti within the 14 day limit.

“It seems that property owners who were hesitant to remove the graffiti are now coming forward and are removing it and that helps out the neighborhoods, that helps out the property values, it helps out people’s peace of mind,” he said.

Kern says he suspects some of the graffiti is gang-related but doesn’t have a sense of how much.

“We just know it doesn’t belong and we’re going to get rid of it,” he said.
