Movie Box Office Dominated By Two Films
The box office race this Mother’s Day weekend was a two picture story.
Even though it slid 58% below its opening weekend totals, “Iron Man 3” stayed on top of the big money race with $72.5 million over Mother’s Day weekend. It has taken in a total of $284.9 million in North American release in just two weeks. Worldwide, it should soon top one billion in ticket sales.
“The Great Gatsby” did far better than expected, but still came in second spot. It sold $51.1 million over the weekend. Based on the source material and the popularity of the story, plus the marquee value of Leonardo DiCaprio, it is expected to continue to have very good ticket sales. For example, the number three film, “Pain and Gain,” only took in a total of $5 million.
Leading the limited release market was the film “Mud” starring Matthew McConaughey. It is showing on only 854 screens and took in $2.3 million. In comparison, “Iron Man 3” is showing on 4,253 screens and “The Great Gatsby” is on 3,535 screens.
Opening May 16 is “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
