BRIDGETON, MO (KMOX) - North St. Louis County residents who for years have been putting up with the stench of a burning landfill could see some action today from the Missouri Attorney General.

Attorney General Chris Koster’s lawsuit against Republic Services Inc., the owners of the Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill, is scheduled for a hearing this afternoon in St. Louis County Circuit Court. The suit alleges multiple violations of environmental laws from hazardous chemicals in the air and in the black liquid leachate oozing into groundwater.

The fire has been smoldering since December of 2010 and the suit asks the court to order the landfill owners to develop an aggressive plan to finally put it out or face possible fines of tens of thousands of dollars each day.

There is no mention in the lawsuit of any monetary relief for residents.
