‘Old Slave Road’ Saga Could End Monday

WILDWOOD, MO (KMOX) – The saga of Old Slave Road could come to a close in Wildwood this evening.

A city official says that if the city council decides to go along with the Administration/Public Works Subcommitee recommendation during its work session this evening, the proposal to change the road’s name may never come up for a vote at a regular council meeting.

A petition to change the name was first reviewed late last year, at first to “Spiceberry Court,” then to “Elijah Madison Lane”, in honor of a former slave-turned-infantry corporal who lived in that area. But last month the committee voted against any name change by a 6-1 margin. Since then the city has received a request to rename it ” U.S. Citizen Road.”

The name change is not on the agenda for tonight’s council meeting. Council members are scheduled to take up the question during their pre-meeting work session.
