Illinois State Police Trooper Hits, Kills Carnival Trucker

COLLINSVILEL, Ill. (KMOX) — Authorities say a carnival-truck driver whose convoy was stopped on Illinois 159 near Swansea was killed when an Illinois State Police sport utility vehicle struck him early this morning.

St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone says 46-year-old James Gaskill of Monmouth died at the scene.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says a District 11 Trooper transporting an prisoner to the St. Clair County jail struck Gaskill around 1:24 Tuesday morning.

A preliminary investigation reveals the trooper was driving under the posted speed limit and slowed upon approaching about 8-10 illegally parked truck tractor semi-trailers. Bond says several people were standing near the trucks as the trooper was driving southbound.

It’s unclear how Gaskill got in front of the trooper’s car. A witness told police he was running in the southbound lanes of traffic near the center dotted line.
